Hello Everyone,
For this final blog, I would like to learn of ways to improve my course. I totally restructured the course from last semester and it seems I end up doing that every semester. Good or Bad - - - not sure without your input.
So please post a comment about your experiences in this class. Certainly I encourage you to comment to one another and have open discussions about what you liked and did not like. This post is for a grade - This time it is NOT based on content however because I don't want you to fear that I will penalize for negative comments. If you make an honest post, you get the points. Thanks, Splichal
I honestly enjoyed this course more so than any other I have had at FHSU or other institutions as a virtual student (and I'm not just saying this to 'suck up'). The communication was vital. When I had a question or concern, I would get a prompt response from the professor via email. The phone calls helped me make a connection with not only the professor, but the university as well. The instructions for the assignments were clear and concise (with examples). I rarely read an assignment and didn't fully comprehend my responsibilities. I cannot say this about other classes I am currently taking. Many on campus students and professors don't understand the unnecessary frustration that is caused to an online student when information isn't presented in a succinct and effective manner. I really appreciated that in this class, almost every assignment was application based. In my academic career (over 200 credit hours and counting) I can write a paper in my sleep (mild exaggeration). I want to be challenged and I need to learn and understand the essential knowledge that will help me become the highly effective and competent teacher that I aim to be. This is not accomplished by regurgitating textbook content over and over again. It comes through applicable practice and thoughtful analysis of content. What would I change about this class. Well, as I said, I've already told the professor several times that I have learned more in this class than in many previous classes put together. If it were my class, I would 'amp up' the application even more. For example, in Project 2: # 4 where we defined in our own words a description of the programs available at the Center for Civic Education website, I would have students write a mini-lesson directly applying these resources into content that can be used in the classroom setting. It would be a little more work for the student, but they would walk away from it with direct experience and ideas for application. All in all, I wish more classes were set up like this one. Blogging instead of 'same ol' discussion postings in BB' was also a nice deviation.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I agree completely with Victoria. I really appreciated the clarity in project instructions, and the opportunity to apply my knowledge and dig deeper into the material than a 10-question multiple choice quiz over chapters read. Another thing I really liked was that responses from Kevin were prompt and insightful and I never felt ignored, which happens occasionally as a virtual student.
ReplyDeleteThe flexibility of this class's structure was very much appreciated as well. When the load became heavy in other classes (or work, or home, etc.), I knew that I could pace myself with this course as long as the requirements were completed by the deadline. This is the main reason I am a virtual college student; if I need to "take my class" at 10:30 p.m. so that I don't miss an event with my family, I can do so. This class fit into that framework perfectly.
Teaching through problem solving, inquiry-based instruction, project-based learning - these are buzz-words that we hear throughout the department during our education here at FHSU. This class helped us learn not only how to apply these tools, but also set an example for putting these methods into practice.
The only thing I might suggest altering is the phone call component. I did enjoy having the chance to talk to an instructor "live," and I have to admit that the prospect of an upcoming call kept me motivated to complete assignments sooner rather than later. However, some different options for times to call would have been nice - even daytime office hours. Realistically, this probably takes too much instructor time, however, and I do appreciate the investment of time it must take to field phone calls from every student in the course!

ReplyDeleteSorry, just checking to see if it would post before I typed this all out! Ok, Mr. Splichal, to be quite honest, this is the class that I have enjoyed the most in a long time. There are several reasons for this.
ReplyDelete1. You allowed us to work at our own pace, but also gave us deadlines to keep us on track.
2. You were more than available and willing to answer questions that we had.
3. There weren't any lectures! I absolutely loved that. In my other classes, we are required to take notes and often times, there is only relevant information half of the time. When the on-campus students are speaking, we can't hear the discussions.
4. I felt that each project or requirement helped me understand more how to teach social studies and/or made me THINK! Sometimes things are too easy and I felt engaged in the activities you had us do.
5. And, you have been one of those teachers that was willing to work with us when things weren't going exactly as they should. Some teachers are not as accommodating or understanding.
For those of us online students who work full-time and have other commitments, this is a perfectly structured class. Amanda made a good point about the phone call, but it wasn't an issue for me as I work 8-4. No issue there for me, but I can see that some students may find it difficult.
The only negative that I had with this course was that until now, I couldn't get any of my blogs to post. And now, magically, it is working. However, that isn't a complaint with your class, simply a complaint with blogspot.
If I think of anything else before the course ends, I will be sure to post again!!
Thanks for a great semester! I really enjoyed this class.
I have to agree with the other bloggers. My experience with this class has truly been refreshing. Honestly, if the class had been structured in a way that was so much easier for me as a full-time mom and having a full-time job. I think at times instructors don't realize that we go to school online for a reason, not that our curriculum should be easier or less informative, but it's all about the way it's structured. I mentioned this to you personally on our phone calls Mr.Spichal, that having the semester broke down in 4 modules made my life so much easier. The reason for that is, because when you have such a hectic schedule or life such as mine, there are going to be weeks where things are crazier than others, having an entire month to work at my own pace with the assignments, allowed me to utilize my more "free" weeks to really focus on my homework and school, and the weeks that were just extremely crazy and busy for me, I was able to focus on my kids or my job and not stress about school. While I feel like i learned and accomplished just as much as having weekly assignments due each time every week. The structure of this course made all the difference because I felt the assignments were still "tough" they were too easy, but yet I was given the time to really complete them the way I needed too. The being able to call you once a month and have some sort of contact was nice as well, it definitely personalized it and really made me feel as a student you were interested in my thoughts and progress. Sadly enough, the college teachers who teach us a certain way to be in our future classrooms don't often practice the same routine with us as students. I appreciated the fact that if I had a question, I was able to get a response from you in a reasonable amount of time rather than freaking out for days because I hadn't heard back (which is the case with ALL my other instructors at this time). I honestly at one point would've dropped this semester due to my other courses unreasonable curriculum and unwilling instructors to assist me as online learner, but with the flexibility and attention that I got from you, made it easier for me to keep going, thank goodness!!! The ONLY "problem" I had was with a couple of the projects where we had to go visit with a principal or teachers or school board meetings. Being that I do have a lot going on, I didn't have a lot of "free time" to that. In my school district (Wichita), we don't seem to have easy access to the principals as maybe other schools do, they are extremely busy, so I found that to be a little challenging. HOWEVER, once again you worked with me through communication to see that I still had a way to complete the assignment. I really don't see a lot that you need to change, I think you might have finally found a way to design this course, maybe other online instructors will see how it's benefited us and you, and will follow along. I wish you taught more of the courses that I have left to take. Thanks for a wonderful semester Mr.Spichal. I have much respect and appreciation for you.
ReplyDeleteEvery person that has posted so far pretty much took the words right out of my mouth! I was extremely impressed with how smooth this class was structured. I currently am a Para at the elementary school in the town I live in. I work from 8-3:45. This class was structured perfectly for a busy student a.k.a. an online student. What I loved most is how fast you responded to my questions. I would either message you on skype or send you an e-mail. I would always receive a message back from you the same day. This is definately NOT the case with my other instructor. I would say if there was no skype group with other students from my other class, I probably would have dropped it because the instructor was so unclear about what she wanted on the assignments. I also liked how you broke the assignments down into four modules. This gives everyone the perfect amount of time to finish them by the deadline. If I had a problem with an assignment or had a question about the assignment, I knew I would receive a prompt answer. Another positive about the class, was that we knew there was going to be a phone call, project and blog each module. There were going to be no surprises. Like two people mentioned, the only thing I might change is the time constraints in which we can call. I will admit I am a huge procrastinator and would call at the last minute. I would have a hard time getting through because people would be trying to call you or the line would be busy. However, if it got to be late, I would drop you an e-mail telling you the situation and you would accommodate to what happened. I think leaving this class structured the way you did this semester would benefit not only us, but many students! Thanks for an enjoyable semester!
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed this class. I agree with the other students, the strengths of this class include: timely response to questions, a caring instructor that includes humor, clear instruction, clear due dates, and clear expectations. For me personally, I benefit from clear deadlines and due dates. One thing that would have probably helped me more, is assignment of chapter reading with some sort of check in place like a quiz. I know that is just me. But I know I would have internalized the information more if that would have been required.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this class, at first I was a little overwhelmed and concerned about the grouping of the projects. I was afraid it would cause me to procrastinate however, it worked really well. I loved how clear the directions were and everything actually pertained to real life teaching. I must admit I was a little terrified about the phone conversations. However, that might have been my favorite part, I can tell that you are passionate about teaching and making connections with your students. This made me feel comfortable to ask any questions. You were always quick to respond to questions, which is so valuable in these virtual classes. I also liked the blog where I could read what other students were encountering in classrooms, it gave me insight on how to do things differently. One request I have is that you leave the class on for a little while after the semester is over so that I have time to download or read over the information that you have on Blackboard. There is a lot that I just haven’t had time to look at. I’m not sure if you control it or not but, if you do I would appreciate some more time. Overall the class went great, very organized and relevant.
ReplyDeleteThis course structure made learning and completing information more instructional than previous courses. I was concerned with myself and procrastination at the beginning with such a lengthy time period to complete assignments, but this course has worked out much better than previous courses and I did not feel overwhelmed. It seemed like more of a virtual course learning experience rather than the instructor pushing and making it seem like the daily class. It allowed for adjustments in completing work during the "crazy" days that all of us have in living an everyday life, with the job, kids, spouse, and home.
ReplyDeleteThank you greatly!!
You provided a quality learning experience for myself and showed great character in wanting us to learn and succeed by being involved. Your actions of instruction and being involved is one part of this course that I plan to take with me for future use and work on as being a good instructor. I liked how the information to learn was divided into units and was not just learning from the book. I do not learn well from a book! I enjoyed the hands-on experience of attending a school board meeting and personally visiting about Special Needs accommodations. I learned a great deal from these experiences!
It was quite refreshing to do something out of the ordinary. I loved that you allowed us to get out of the textbook. So many of the FHSU teacher's have taught us to do this as a teacher (be creative and outside of the textbook and lecturing), but when it comes to their class that is all they do - lecture and textbook assignments (blackboard quizes from the reading). Blah, I am so sick of blackboard quizes I could...(I will leave out the graphic details).
ReplyDeleteAnyways, the workload was great. However I am a total procrastinator. I would have probably turned in better quality if the projects would have been broken up in smaller chunks. I will admit the phone calls were super intimidating at first, I thought I would be quizzed or made out to be a fool. They were totally the opposite! It was nice to hear your voice and the concern you have for me in understanding each project. Thank you so much for that. Speaking for myself as a virtual candidate, I have felt a huge disconnect from instructors, the phone call created connection. Agreeing with others -your humor was great and refreshing as well!

ReplyDeleteAs many of the others have state here, I say this course was well worth my time, energy, and money. I will share below my thoughts of this class.
1.) No scheduled meetings to take notes. As a virtual student, I take these course because I do not want to sit in a class for a period of time. Many classes are a waste to watch as a virtual student.
2.) Assignments and due dates were well defined. There was not guessing game here. Well planned out.
3.) The instructor was available and responded in a timely fashion.
4.) Allowed me to think creatively. I am never impressed how teachers teach that teachers should not assess by pencil and paper alone, but they turn around give several high-point multiple choice tests throughout the semester. However, just the opposite was done in this course. During this particular course, I felt that I was assessed on how well I knew the content by multiple means of assessment: phone calls, projects, blogs, and writing papers.
5.) I feel like I have a connection with my instructor by being able to call him.
Well, like everyone else, I enjoyed this course, as well! I was able to complete assignments at my own leisure but with a definite deadline for each project. I tried to complete everything way in advice, because the projects took quite a bit of time. I really appreciated the fact that the load was lightened when we had to complete our lesson plans. The most important factor to me was the timely fashion in which our questions were answered. I really, really appreciated the almost immediate feedback to every e-mail I sent to you! Plus, every time I tried to reach you on the phone I was able to get through! To me, the time in which an instructor responds to my questions is very important. I can't complete an assignment if I don't know what to do. The only thing I didn't care for was having to hand in all of the assignments through GoogleDocs. It really wasn't a huge problem. I figured it out after the first few assignments. And, when I did have trouble with it for one assignment, you were very flexible. Each project that we had to complete was explained in detail and easy to follow. I really feel that this class was well organized and easy to manage.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Brandi S:
ReplyDeleteYes, I enjoyed the phone calls, because they added that personal connection. That is the bad thing about online courses: I feel so disconnected from everyone. That is why I appreciate our Skype groups so much! I, too, thought we were going to be drilled and asked a bunch of questions, but it wasn't like that at all. The phone calls were mainly to answer any of our questions and to clear up any confusion.
I have to add something else to my post!
ReplyDeleteI loved the fact that each module included the same components. I knew what to expect when a new module was started. And, I am the type of person who likes to have a list that I can check completed items off of. This is exactly how this course operated. I like to be able to see what I am expected to do.
I agree with everyone else that this class was well worth the time and money. Mr. Splichal was always there to respond to any questions immediately whether by phone call or email. I felt like he respected us as students and used our time well. I really enjoyed that he did not focus as much on the content of social studies but the methods of teaching. I really enjoyed this class and learned a great deal and did some things I probably would not have done had there not been assignments for it but were extremely beneficial.
ReplyDeleteI too have enjoyed this class. Email, Skype, and phone communication was quick and efficient. I was rather nervous about the first phone call, but it was a great call. I enjoyed the way that the class was structured. On the first day of class I knew exactly what was expected and when the assignments were due. The vast majority of instructors do not put this information on BB, I like to know exactly what is due and when it is due so I can work out a schedule. Mr. Splichal’s schedule was clear and exact. I liked the way that the emphasis was taken away from learning everything from the book and part of that emphasis was placed on learning using hands-on experiences. Like others have said, I too enjoyed the framework of this class. I am enrolled in six classes this semester. Between those classes, two internship classes, corrections of reading disabilities mentoring, family, and church this class fit in perfectly! Some other classes force virtual students to watch adobe connect meetings and take notes, most of which doesn’t apply to us. I did feel that project #1 could have included a little more direction, I felt like I understood the assignment but after it was graded...I apparently didn’t understand it as much as I though I did :-)
ReplyDeleteA great class, I wouldn’t change the structure of the class at all except maybe allowing phone calls during your office hours. Thanks for a great semester!
OK - so I read what you wanted for this blog and put it off for a week or so thinking that whatever I put would sound like I was "sucking up." I couldn't think of anything I disliked, and I didn't want to blog about it. Now that I have read other blogs, I am happy to see I am not the only one!
ReplyDeleteThis has been the best class I have taken! Everything was clearly stated, and we knew what your expectations were. If we did ever have a question, there was always a quick response, actually answering the question that was asked. I appreciated the fact you wanted to talk to each of your students, and make sure we understand what you are asking of us. For once, I felt an instructor cared how we were doing in the class, I wish more instructors made us feel like human beings instead of just an ID number.
I loved the assignments, they required us to give our own answers and ideas, and allowed us to be creative, instead of just listing answers out of a book.
I liked the phone call, but like most, I waited until the last minute, so I had to listen to a busy signal - no fault by my own. If there was some way to schedule those so you and the students weren't frantically waiting until the last 2 days to complete, that would be great. It can't be fun having the phone to your ear for 2 evenings straight! Great class and great instructor!
Brandi~ I completely related to your comment about the professors and how many preach that we should not use worksheets and to get the students involved, but they do the exact things they tell us not to do. This is very frustrating. I had one professor count me down for using a worksheet when she uses them every class.
ReplyDeleteMeredith~ I am really glad that we are being forced to learn google docs now because I think the use of google docs in the classroom is a great asset and having students post their papers in google docs is an easy way to share the information whether it is just with the teacher or with the whole class. I would rather have glitches now so that I can catch on later. That is also another plus of this class, Mr. Splichal was always understanding and helpful if something didn't work right and adaptations needed to be made.
I enjoyed this class and to be honest I was dreading it at first. When I read that we would have to make a phone call for each module I was irritated. Now that was my first reaction. My second thought, after my heart stopped racing, was that the instructor was really putting effort into this course and the students. After thinking that I was then intimidated. I was frantically reading and re-reading my Social Studies book for that first phone call. I just knew I was going to be tested when I called. I was relieved to see that the conversations went another direction. I really enjoyed the conversations and it felt good to be able to actually speak to a professor and get feedback. I like the idea of the phone call. I wouldn't change that if I were you Splichal. Some of us need that type of communication.
ReplyDeleteI am not happy with my module 1 grade and honestly I thought I did better on module 2 but the points did not show that. I'd like to say I think you grade hard. Maybe that's a good thing but not for my 4.0 GPA I have had throughout my education courses. Some students will say a professor should be that way but I think you are too hard. As of right now I still have an A in this course but its very low. Maybe you could put a warning label on your syllabus next semester. Warning: I grade hard.
----remember I like to joke but there is some truth to this joke. ;) I know you have told us exactly what you expect and maybe my work wasn't what you expected and the real world won't let a person get by with less than what is expected. I get that. But I am awesome at what I do and will be a great teacher. There's more to me than module 1 and module 2. Now, I'm done whining.
After saying all that, you are one of my favorite professors. I enjoy harassing you about my grade and I wish more could be like you. (except for the grading hard part) ha ha ha. . . .
I have learned a great deal from this course and a big thank you for not making us do a mini-teach. That almost makes up for grading too hard. :) Like I said, I really enjoyed the phone conversations. Oh and before I forget. . . what a great idea to have us attend a board meeting. This makes us look good if you ask me. I really need to attend more because I was very interested in the last one I went to. I like to know what is going on. Also, it was very embarrassing when I attended the one for a grade. This is why: There were a few people sitting in the audience, including me, and all of the principals and board members were at the front of the room facing the audience. After about 15 minutes of the meeting everyone in the audience left!!!! I was the only one sitting in the audience facing all the board members and principals. This made me very uneasy. That is what nightmares are made of. I survived and now they all know what I look like. Of course all the principals and Superintendent already knew me but still. . . .I was embarrassed. Good idea though. I wouldn't change that next semester either.
Thanks for all the feedback and being clear about what is due and when. You seem very organized and kind.
I agree with Meredith. I was kind of bent out of shape when I found out that we were going to have to learn how to use Google Docs, but now I use them for several other things. And I can see a real value in Good Docs for the classroom also. My students will know how to use it early in the school year :-)
ReplyDeleteThere are many things that I liked about this class. First the phone calls that were required were very helpful, although the first one was a bit scary, because I didn’t know what to expect. I think they are helpful and you should defiantly keep them in your plans for next semester. Second there is good and bad about lumping the projects, calls and blogs together. I found it great for me because I am a planner so I know what I need to do each day, however this maybe a problem for some students. In my opinion as a teacher you need to maintain your time and have great discipline, so I say keep them blocked together and make the students learn skills to get it done in time. Third and maybe the best thing is that you are available to answer questions. I find this very helpful. You also answer questions quickly and grade our paper promptly as well. One suggestion that you mentioned to me was to add you to our Skype group. I think that if you set up a Skype group and then had online hours this would helps your students as well. I know several instructors who do this. Fourth I just want to thank you for being clear on your directions for assignments, I do believe that it made this class a lot more enjoyable. Last but not least the lesson plans were a bit tricky to figure out this semester and I know they were new for everyone. I liked that you posted Dr. Walizer’s cast. One thing that I think would have helped us a little more would have been for you to have an example of what you wanted to see, because each instructor wanted something different. Overall I enjoyed this class and it was great to get out of the textbook!
ReplyDeleteLike so many other people in this class, I did like this class. I enjoy submitting everything to the Google docs instead of blackboard. I have so many other classes that I do everything in blackboard and it gets boring. I have been an online student since 2001. In all my other classes I would email or we did an adobe connect where the teacher would talk and we had to type to talk. It is really nice to be able to pick up the phone and call and talk about what is due and how I am doing on it.
ReplyDeleteI did my lesson plans before the Dr. Walizer recordings so I struggled trying to get through that. I would say keep the recordings on for next semester so if someone needs to work ahead and get them done they would be able to use them for references. Other than that it was a great class. We had some great discussions on Skype and had fun.
In response to Samantha Beames:
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree that an example would have been helpful. Each instructor expects something a little different. But, I was glad that Mr. Splichal posted Dr. Walizer's video, so we could follow along with her instructions.
I enjoyed this course! I liked the way you set up the assignments in modules, well in advance, so that we virtual students who are juggling a full class load, work, and family and home obligations could plan ahead in order to meet deadlines. I appreciated your quick responses to emails and the fact that I could reach you by phone on a regular basis! There was never a time that I had a question or problem and was unable to reach you for help. You obviously care about your students.
ReplyDeleteI also believe I learned more through the research required in the projects than I would have by just reading a textbook and taking multiple-choice quizzes. I learned a great deal about learning styles, teaching strategies, and social studies subject matter, and I’ve referred back to my research numerous times throughout the semester – for other courses as well as this one. Submitting via Google docs was a little stressful for me at first, simply because I hadn’t used it much before, but once I got used to it, it seemed to work well. I liked being able to see your comments and suggestions on my assignments.
Also, I’d like to thank you for not requiring me to watch hours of Adobe lectures and submit notes to prove I’m watching them! I have a hearing impairment, and Adobe and Podcast recordings are pure torture for me; I have to rewind numerous times to hear what is being said, plus there are the ever-present technology glitches to contend with.
I wouldn’t change a thing about this course. In fact, I’d like to see other courses follow the same structure. I feel as if you’ve prepared me to be a good social studies teacher. Thank you!
Mr. Splichal -
ReplyDeleteI also think that the course was structure in such a way that it was easy to understand what the expectations were. I appreciate the phone calls, as they were not only helpful for the course, but also helped me stay on track personally.
I also agree with some of the other students that the course has been designed in such a way that it works around nearly everyone's schedule. I feel that some professors do often forget that we are taking online courses for a reason, and many people have full time jobs and even families to take care of. My plate is full enough with just a full time job so I couldn't imagine trying to take care of a family and take on some of the coursework I receive in other classes.
I also would like to see more courses structured in this manner. I have had maybe 2 classes in my entire college career (6 years!) that have been set up where there is a set amount of assignments due by the end of each month and not something due every other day or so - and those types of courses are perfect for me to manage since I can choose when to do the assignments as long as they are finished by the due date. So if there is any way - please provide input to other professors that we all enjoy the structure of this course.
Kristi, I completely agree with you. This has been one of my favorite courses in a long time. Maybe that is because I felt the instructor actually cared about how we were doing, maybe it was because I am really busy and it was nice to be able to work at my own pace. Either way, this was an excellent course. I posted earlier about this class and my position hasn't changed one bit. I also would love to see other instructors take the time for us online students. I often feel as though we are placed on the back burner even though we pay more for our classes. And, I have shared with many other students our equal concern about some of the other classes we are taking.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, hands down my most favorite course to date! Thank you Mr. Splichal for a great semester!!
Splichal~~You are one of the best professors I have had. You and Dr. Walizer have taught me so much. I was giving you a hard time above!:) I wanted to say this to you because we have had some issues with other professors this semester where we truly didn't learn anything. I was enrolled in 3 classes but only did work in 2. You do grade hard but it's because you put so much care into your students and teaching. Thank you for always informing me of what you expect and thank you for always being available. (especially with having us call you)--Again, I joke because I like ya!!!!! Thank you for having an impact on my education.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I appreciated the way this course was broken down by week periods. It allowed students to really work at their own pace and do additional research on topics. The supplements to the chapter readings were also beneficial. I appreciated the projects, regardless of how lengthy they seemed at times! The projects allowed students to apply the readings into classroom settings and think “outside the box”. Furthermore, the communication was timely as well as the posting of grades. Overall, the least stressful course this semester and by far the most enjoyable! I have to admit, I love history in general so it was useful to learn how to place it in an elementary classroom, as a daily lesson, and not just something they may address once a week. If the students we are educating are not aware of their own history, the society is doomed to repeat and not learn from what mistakes have already been made.
ReplyDeleteWell I had a good three paragraphs written and with one click....poof!!! Nothing like starting completely over....grrrr.
ReplyDeleteLike many students I was shocked with my project one grade because I put a lot of effort into it and researched for hours. Since many students feel the same way perhaps a more detailed example will help next semester's students meet your expectations. I have been very happy with my grades since then and my confidence has been restored thank goodness. Nothing is scarier than feeling like you can't meet your instructor's expectations and you aren't good enough.
The blog was a nice alternative to the discussion board in Blackboard. We will most likely not be using discussion boards in our own classrooms but we most certainly can create a blog so any experience is great.
The phone call assignment told me that you cared about how each one of your students were doing and you wanted to answer any questions. I would have preferred a video chat through Skype. I like to see the person I am talking with and it would have been more personal in my opinion. As an online student it's easy to feel like you are just a number and nobody really knows anything about you. I definitely didn't feel this way with you at all but I would have preferred to see you and you see me so we could have put a face with the name. I know you didn't want to make appointments with the phone call but I would imagine that it would be easier if could schedule appointments via Skype throughout the month. Even the possibility of asking you to do a video chat when we saw that you were online would have been great. You could always say no but the option would have been nice to have. Just a thought!
Overall, I greatly appreciated your willingness to help! I also liked how we knew way in advance what was due and the directions were clear. Having a month to complete assignments really helps online learners. They can fit homework in around life and still have a great learning experience! Your assignments provided the most valuable learning experience that I have had in a long time. I'm so glad that you didn't have us just read the text and do quizzes! You provided us with opportunities to think about how we are going to implement social studies in our own classroom someday. I felt that you were willing to go the extra mile to teach us, the way that you would want us to teach. Practice what you preach and you most certainly do that. So often I feel that all I do is write, write, write about stuff that I will never use again so I'm glad you gave me an opportunity to stop and actually think about how I will actually do things in my own classroom some day.
Mr. Splichal,
ReplyDeleteWhile taking a moment to reflect upon this BUSY semester and course, I too; would have to agree that the course structure and ease of communication, held a tremendously positive aspect to how I felt comfortable with you, and knew what you expected of me. I felt challenged and that you really cared (amongst all your other responsibilities) to take the time to email, skype and devote your personal time to phone calls of all the students, making sure everyone was on the same page.
As we are students in the virtual world, it is easy to feel “forgotten” or “out in left field” while taking virtual (some) courses. I always felt that you were willing and able when we needed you, and that you took careful consideration into the modules you constructed, again challenging us; not just in a “general Social Studies book” with, discussion boards, to quizzes, to general assessment(s)…..but to “think outside the box” of what education is how we can improve our instruction; understanding the curriculum and pedagogy that an educator should hold!
Being aware of the course format and what was expected us FORM THE BEGINNING was a PLUS! I am a planner and knowing what was due from Aug 23rd to Dec 16th, helped me to organize my 16 hrs. for this semester! I felt the 4 modules held a higher level thinking than some of the work I have completed in other educational department course here at FHSU.
Again, rather than do a discussion board over readings, computer quizzes and assessments- I felt challenged in the modules format and objectives we had to complete within them. Your personal responses and not just giving points for the assignment, helped for me to improve or to see what I was good at and what you enjoyed reading! I felt coming into this course was just going to be another general format and I received more than that…..I have a instructor whom I will continue to stay in contact with, share ideas with, and gain personal and personal insight on what becoming and being an educators is truly about! Thank you so much!

Kevin--
ReplyDeleteWow! What a semester! This has been a really hard semester for me and as you know Social Studies is not one of my strengths. I have really enjoyed this course with the way you had it set up. You gave us a whole month to do the assignments in each module. The part I liked the best was the phone calls. The first one I was really nervous but after that I was a lot more calm. As a virtual student it is nice to be able to talk with the instructor rather than listening to them lecture and take note. The lectures take up time that most of us don't have and most of the time it was hard to get information from the lectures because I couldn't always hear. So thank you so much for not lecturing and having us submit notes. I really think that you need to talk to or do a presentation to the other instructors on your method of teaching. You also need to share how you keep in contact with your students through email, skype, and phone calls. I have had the worst experience this semester with not getting any answers through email or skype. This biggest one was when I could plainly see that the teacher was online and you typed to them with a question and you get no response. You are quick with your responses via email and skype and I can't thank you enough for that. You are also very understanding when it comes to turning in assignments.
There are only a couple of things I didn't like about this course. I didn't like submitting through googledocs because it wouldn't let me upload my scanned documents. The last one is project 4. You know I don't like Social Studies and here I am thinking of more lessons for this project. I know you said to think outside of the textbook but it is not that easy for me. I will do it anyway. Oh yeah! One more thing..I believe someone mentioned the phone call days and times...It would have been better to be able to call during the day or have 3 days of the week to be able to call. No matter how I tried to call before the week they were due something always came up that kept me from doing so. Then when I got to call it took me two days to get through. However, that is not a complaint but I do admire you for being able to take time out of your nights to visit with your students.
Thank you so much for all your determination for your students!!
Take care and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Here are the things I loved about this class:
ReplyDelete1. No lectures. I'm not an auditory learner and I really wander off sometimes during lectures, so I was so glad not to have any for this class! And no notes to stress about turning in for said lectures! :)
2. I liked being able to work at my own pace, but with a set due date. That really helped me to think about things and spend more time on them, as well as get other things done for other classes.
3. I liked that you (Kevin) were always there if we had a question, problem, concert, etc. This was so helpful to me, even though you probably got tired of hearing from me! :) It's nice to at least have some kind of relationship with an instructor, since I'm not on campus. That seems to be sort of rare.
4. The assignments really made me think. I had to think about how to do things, what were effective teaching strategies and more. Project 1 really spurred me thinking about what made my teacher's effective. I thought about the concepts I remember from school and then looked at the ways they were taught at different levels. This was a unique experience for me to reflect from my own life.
The biggest thing I wish I would've had more of was working more with other students. It seems that without our Skype groups, I wouldn't hardly know anyone! I'd like to interact more with other students in positive ways. That was really the only downside of the class!
Thank you for a great semester and for adding to my knowledge base!
Happy holidays!
The first thing about this course I would like to address is the availabitity of the instructor. Mr. Splichal was always ready, willing, and able to answer any questions, and he did it quickly! That is so helpful when you need to get things done. I really appreciate this quality in an instructor. The phone calls, though, I felt were a little needless. While I appreciate Mr. Splichal’s open lines of communication with his students, I could have just as easily, and I did, email any questions. The course information stated that we would be demonstrating understanding of content during the calls, but that wasn’t the case. Another thing I liked about this course is the freedom to work at my own pace on the assignments. As we all have busy lives, it is really nice to be able to do things more on our own schedule. I feel like I have learned a lot about teaching social studies, much of which has come from the blog as well as the course content.
ReplyDeleteMr. Splichal,
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with the rest of classmates in saying that I love the format of this class. Like some of my classmates had said in their posts, the way that this class is set up is very flexible and convenient for those of us that do work time and go to school fulltime. I really thought that most classes in the virtual college would be set up this way, but I was wrong. It was really nice not having to sit for hours a week, watching lectures that are difficult to watch and listen to information that is not even relevant. Many of my classes seem to cater to the on campus students and I feel that as a virtual students we get a raw deal in our education. It makes it very difficult when you need questions answered and you have an instructor that does not get back with you or provide feedback. I will have to say that you have been very prompt on grading our assignments and getting back to use when we have questions. I was unsure how the phone call assignment would work, but it was actually quite nice to touch base with you and actually talk with you. I also really enjoyed having our assignments broken into the 4 modules. The directions given were very clear on what we had to do, and we had plenty of time to complete our assignments. I also liked that we did projects instead of taking quizzes over the readings. I find that I get much more out doing actual projects where I can apply the knowledge I have learned from the class. I think that this is very beneficial. All in all I really enjoyed this class and I really like the way it is set up.
Mr. Splichal,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I would like to say that my first indication that you were a great instructor was when I saw you write "HAHAHAHA" in an email. :) I loved that. Too often, you just can't get any friendliness out of instructors/advisors. Being a virtual student, 99% of my communication with instructors is via email. It really irks me when I spend the time to write a friendly, yet professional email to an instructor and all I receive back is a one-word response..no punctuation, no signature..nothing. Those types of instructors are sending out the message that they are just too busy to respond to you and do not care. I also appreciated your email about your friend's experience with the little boy licking her leg. Thanks for the humor! It's just nice to be able to TALK to someone through these emails, rather than feeling offended by the lack of a response or friendliness or feeling as though it is all business.
It's always a relief to look over the syllabus and due dates and realize that you will not have an assignment due every other day! I really appreciated the fact that we had more time to work on things. Learners who are completely virtual appreciate this because so many of our other online classes require assignments to be submitted several times throughout the week, plus watching lectures and submitting notes on top of that! I am totally committed to spending the time to do a good job on an assignment, and I'd rather have a few weeks to produce a quality piece of work, rather than only having a day to get it done.
I also liked the use of the blog rather than doing 18 discussion boards. To be honest, I did not always read every post in the typical discussion board forum; however, using the blog, it is so easy to just scroll down and read through all of the comments instead of having to "go back" and open up the next thread. Reading other students' blog posts gave me ideas and maybe made me think of something in a different light.
Two suggestions I have..
First, on the page in BlackBoard where you have all of the assignments listed, it might be easier to locate assignments and chapters to be reviewed during each module if you had them separated into folders. In the beginning, I was very confused as to which specific methods assignments and chapters I was supposed to be doing. Not a HUGE deal, but it would help as far as organization goes.
Second, although I understand the point of the phone calls and think it is great that you devote your own time to talk to your virtual students, it did cause quite an inconvenience to me this semester. I had contacted you early on to see if we could work out an alternative (as told to do so in the syllabus) due to my involvement and late nights with school activities. If you continue the phone call assignment in the future, maybe offering additional days during the week to call would be a solution to the problem for other students in the same situation as me. Times that I did attempt to call, I was unable to get through and did not want to look like a crazy person calling 10 times after that. :) I do appreciate the concept behind the phone call; however, the limited time frame and days just does not work for all learners. Everyone has a different schedule.
Finally, thank you for the meaningful assignments and projects that you provided us with. To be honest, I had forgotten about all the different areas that are included in social studies instruction. The course and assignments also really made me reflect back to when I was in elementary/high school and realize the lack of meaningful assignments. Your assignments and projects really made me think about how I want to deliver social studies content to my students. Thank you for everything!
Hi Mr. Splichal!! I really liked your course!! I loved the projects (even though I didn't follow instructions very well in project 1). I loved the way it was set up and we didn’t have to watch the adobe connect sessions. The only thing is I wish we could have gotten a little more guidance on the FPA. That is such a big thing for our other methods classes and also for our student teaching that I think as much practice as we can get is good for us.
ReplyDeleteLast Blog! HaHa I have enjoyed this course A LOT! I felt even without the lectures or the adobe connects I got all the information that I need. Social Studies would be my ideal topic to teach in school.
ReplyDelete1. I think the projects were great and they made you read and understand the information without a lecture along with it.
2. Mr. Splichal you have been the first teacher that I have called and actually felt ok to call. I think the phone calls are a great idea. You were very laid back. A lot of the times I'm waiting on an email and you responded very quickly. Thank you for that!
3. I feel I know how to teach a Social Studies lesson.
4. The only thing I would of liked in this class was a sample of the FPA. Since it has changed I sometimes need something to help guide me.
Thank you for all your help in this class! I really enjoyed it.
Let me start off by saying thank you. You are a great example of what a teacher should be. Caring, concerned, a motivator, inspirational amongst other descriptors. This was the type of virtual classroom that I am always looking for. I knew what was expected of me from day 1. There were clear assignments and clear due dates. The due dates allowed me plenty of time to juggle all of my other responsibilities and I truly appreciated that because this was the only class that I had this semester that did not put unnecessary stress on me. I am an adult and as a virtual student, I understand that I am responsible for my assignments. I must stay focused and organized to complete my task. The structure of your class gave me that respect. I think that the phone call is an excellent idea. Like many of my classmates, I feel that there is a disconnect as a virtual student but the phone call added a personal touch. Even though we have never met face to face, I feel that I got to know you as my instructor on a more personal level than any email, blog, or skype can offer (unless video chat/hey, there is an idea!!!). The only thing that I would change, and I hate to say this, is the textbook reading. Although I am tired of chapter quizzes, they are the reason that I delve into the books (especially if I am super busy). These quizzes make me have to spend time in the text and without them, I must confess that I did not spend the time that I should have reading the text. Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration to us all.
ReplyDeleteMr. Splichal,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the format of this class and I appreciate your willingness to break the cookie cutter mold forms every class that I have taken while at FHSU. First off, I will address what I liked about this course.
I liked the freedom of having only four due dates. This allowed me to work ahead or do the assignments as my schedule allowed.
I liked the format of having the distinct modules that contained the same format for the assignments; project, blog, phone call, and methods requirements.
I liked what I perceived as shorter assignments. For example, rather than a three to five page paper on the school board meeting, you required a summary. I feel as though I learned just as much, but I didn’t have to elaborate in exhaustive detail to get full credit.
I liked not having a mini-teach assignment. I feel as though mini-teach assignments are too short to have much value. I much prefer the formal observation.
The phone calls were great. The short conversations that we had are the most I have ever talked to one of my FHSU instructors.
I loved not having recordings to listen to or weekly notes to submit. I realize the purpose of those requirements, but I appreciated the break.
I will also comment on what I didn’t like and give my suggestions for improvement.
I would have liked to have been forced to get into the text a bit more. As a typical college student, I don’t read the textbook for fun and rarely do I do it on my own. But, perhaps a short quiz over each chapter would have encouraged me to open the book and get some of the information that it contained. These quizzes could be incorporated into the four due dates by requiring module 1 to finish quizzes for chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4, etc.
I don’t find much value in the blogs. I realize that they are to encourage discussion, but once I write my entry and reply to a couple of posts, I don’t often go back to even see how students responded to what I wrote. I’m not sure how this could be fixed.
Thank you for a great class!
